What rock have home-schoolers been living under?

Home-school. Kids sit at home or in a controlled environment with a very, very small number of classmates, and do their assignments in a very timely fashion, away from the evils of the world. Come on, seriously?
A parent refuses to put her child through public schooling, because of the drug use, the lack of safety and the lack of education by sheltering them and teaching them only what THEY think should be taught.
Ladie, take the tit out of their mouth and let them make their own decisions, please! I get it. You want your child to get a good education and to be safe. But what is going to happen when they finally get out in the real world? They are going to get exposed to all that evilness you been trying to keep them from.
You gotta let them breathe that smog and take in that second hand smoke before they use their inhailer. You know why we dont have asthma that bad? Its partly because we've gotten used to it cause, guess what? We've been breathing it all our lives.
As a person who has a couple people he knows who were homeschooled, its kinda hard to ask a homeschooler why his/her parents would do such a thing.
Put 'em in a Private school if you're that scared? Oh, wait, they cost to much!
Someone please shed some light on this.

Ha, yeah man, kids need to be exposed to the harsh real world and homeschooling just shelters them from that. When its time for them to go to college you can't just expect them to fit right in to the society that the've hid from all their life. On the other hand that may be the only option. Some schools in Miami for example, kids really hope that they don't get shot today when fights, shootings, and stabbings are a weekly expierience. In those cases that truly treaten your life, its good for people to know they got another option.

It may be the only option, but this is why you learn to defend yourself; so that later in life, when you have a family, you can protect them. This goes above and behind school safety.
