STOP! Read this before posting

A huge percentage of the posts and comments people are submitting are not valid. There are directions on this and you are required to follow them to get any credit.

The following applies to both posts and comments:

1. They have to relate to the class you are in (meaning American HISTORY. Current events do NOT count).
2. They have to be at least two sentences long.
3. They have to give your opinion on the issue.
4. They have to have your full name typed in them.

At this point NONE of the older posts/comments that violate these rules get any credit and you CANNOT go back and fix them. You have to do all new posts/comments to get credit. And, no, you cannot have an extension. And, no, I will not tell you before class tomorrow how many you got credit for. If they violated any of the above four rules, they don't count. Period. Add up the total number you did and subtract one for each post/comment that violates these rules. Rules, by the way, that have been in place since the beginning of the semester.

Historic Inventions

There have been many inventions in American History. From the first car to the first space shuttle, Of all of the invention made in American History what inventions have made the biggest impact on our everyday lives and why?

The War on Drugs

The war on drugs has been going on for a very long time. Government officials are doing everything they can to keep the drugs out of America. What I do not understand, is how are they going to punish people so harshly for less dangerous drugs like marijuana? They are giving longer jail sentences for crimes involved with marijuana than they are for cases like rape, robbery, and battery. Those three crimes right there will do more damage and injury than marijuana will ever do. Also, with some states actually being lenient with marijuana possession (California, Colorado), do you think that ultimately marijuana may actually become legal in all parts of America with some type of rule as to how much you can possess?

Global Warming

I saw the documentary with Al Gore the other day called An Inconvenient Truth. It deals with global warming and what will happen if we don't start doing something about this. Do you think people will actually start listening and start changing there ways? Do you think that in the near future people will sell in their gas guzzling SUV's and sports cars for more energy efficient vehicles?

Music

Each decade since the mid 1900s, there has been a different genre of music coming out. In the 70's there was music such as funk and disco, in the 80's there was heavy metal and hip hop. Do you think there will be other genre's of music coming out in the near future?

George W. Bush or Bill Clinton?

As most are aware, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton are two very controversial presidents of this country. Who do you all like more? What do you have to say about these two former US presidents? What do you think history books will say about Bush when he is out of office, and what do you think the reactions toward Bill Clinton would be if his wife is elected to office?

Sports

As we have learned in class, professional sports is the institution that came from a rise in leisure time. There have been so many sports that have been invented (baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, tennis, etc.). Does anyone believe that maybe some new professional sports will arise in the near future?

History Repeats

I really do not understand why history is constantly repeating itself. Events that have happened in the past usually have come up in the present. There is so much evidence supporting repeating history but what are the real reasons as to why history repeats itself?

The influences of women

Even though women in history were never given the opportunity to contribute their thoughts I really feel like it would have made a difference. Men did all of the thinking and all of the talking and women were never able to make suggestions or contributions towards a better life. Why do you think men looked down upon women so much and never let them speak or think for themselves?

Televisions

Current society could not imagine life without a television. It is one of the most important forms of communication. I know that I learn a lot from sitting back and watching t.v. When televisions were first introduced many Americans where not running to steal them off the shelves. Why do you think it took so long for Americans to realize how important this new invention really was?

Children in History

When students hear about the way children where treated in history it is a pretty shocking way of living. They were treated like adults and contributed dangerous amounts of labor in certain industrys where most of them died. When i hear about the things children used to go through I could not even imagine going through that kinds of things they did. What made people in history realize that children should not be treated this way?

Hispanics in History Class

There are so many important Hispanic figures in history that rarely get discussed in a classroom. I feel like points are made to explore the influences Hispanics had on history but not enough for students to really understand why Hispanics are an inportant aspect of history. I am of Hispanic descent and i would have liked to learn much more on the topic. Aren't they just as important as other races in history?

Violent Acts Caught On Camera (6 high school girls in the fight)

Many of you already know about the beating of a high school teen caught on camera. Six girls and two guys were involved in the crime. A girl was basically invited over to another girls house, a couple other girls showed up and started beating the girl up. Two teenage guys filmed it while the ordeal took place and are also being charged. Without help, the poor girl was trapped and beat relentlessly. The accusations include battery, assault, conspiracy, and kidnapping.

I personally think the teens should all be charged as adults. As young adults yourself, do you think they should be charged as adults so that they are scared straight? Or should the be charged as juveniles.

History in the dark?

One of the things that we have discussed in class before is the way that history is taught in schools. I think that many students education is being shown only one angle of history. While the books and teachers leave many important facts and information in the dark. How do you think this could effect college students after they graduate, and how does it effect high school students once they move on to college.

HBO John Adams

I was wondering how the rest of you feel about the mini series John Adams on HBO? If any of you have been watching do you feel that it is historicaly correct? Also how about its depiction of life during the time period. To me it seems to show me I feel is a correct depiction, and does seem accurate from what I have learned about the time period.

A Woman Under Power?

November is coming very quickly and there is a legitimate chance there will be a woman as the first president of the United States. There have been many women as leaders in other countries, but never in the United States. Why don't you think there has been a president that has been a woman? And also do you think a woman will do a good job as the leader of this country?

Technology and Elections

Now a days, you could turn on the tube and catch most of the election debates on basic cable or even news radio's. It seems though if people in the past, if they wanted to know who they were voting for, they would have to catch the debates first hand, or even word of mouth. I do believe all this media, and modern technology exposure does hurt the candiates as well, there every move is watched and recorded by the media.

Growing technology

We have expanded beyond our wildest dreams when it comes to technology in this world. From the 19th century to the 20th century to now the 21 century is remarkable. In the 19th century our past people were the first to develope railroads, typewriters, etc. now a days we have huge planes that gets us to our location in no time. Thinking about it, what is in store for our children, is there alot more room to expand? The future holds the answer to all these questions.

Waiting

As soldiers of the United States, most are waiting the word of the presidental election. Novemeber is about 7 months away as of right now, thinking how these soldiers prepare there daily lifes not knowing when they are coming home or where they are going to be shipped until then seems a bit crazy. Basically, just saying these soldiers work hard during our every day life and respect is still there for them and there families back home.

History in Sports

Sport figures in the past were looked upon as idols, every sport, football, baseball, and basketball. Now that steriods are such a big deal, is this going to change the way america feels about sports being that sports was put at such a high level of respect. Athletes are tarnishing the games with all the spectlations of steriods and other illegal substances.

Race Between Hiliary vs. Obama

Now that the final stretch of the race between Hiliary vs. Obama is in its final stages, who does America feel better fits this country. I think the number of voters are definetly up from pervious elections because people are in for a change. There's history to be made this election.

THE OUTCOME OF THE ELECTION

Do you think many people are nervous for a girl running the country? Are do you think many people are more nervous for a black male to run the country? Well I think it's both. Many people religion doesn't believe in women having any control. They think it is the man job to have things in order. But if we were to have a black man president I think he will probably get assassinated because we never had a black man for president, and there are still racist people out there. So this election have to be the most interesting one. Do you think either one of them ready to take this big responsibility???

Reminder

For you to get credit for a blog post it has to meet all of the following requirements:

*It has to relate to the class -- AMH 1041, American Experience I -- meaning it has to relate to the specific parts of American history that we talk about in this class. You can't talk about current events or politics.
*It has to include your opinion, you can't just ask a question.
*It has to be, at a minimum, two sentences long.

Anything that doesn't meet all three of these does not get credit.

Wet feet/Dry feet

As most of us all know, the wet feet/dry feet law applies to the Cuban immigrants who are coming into Miami. The law states that if a Cuban immigrant touches land without being caught by authorities, than they are allowed to stay here in America. What I don't understand is how that law only applies to Cubans, I remember when I was in high school and I was driving in Key Biscayne, a ship that ran ground which was full of 200+ Hatian immigrants, all of the immigrants then began swimming to shore, jumping on the freeway and jumping in the back of trucks begging for freedom. The authorities caught them all and sent them back to their country. Post your opinions on this matter...

Hilary Vs Obama

As a African American women it is a hard decision on if I should vote for Hilary or Obama. As a women your first mind would say Hilary. However as a African American I feel obligated to vote for Obama. What affect do you think this election has had on both the women in this country as well as the African American community?

Security in America

Do you think security has gotten better since 911? Think about the airports ,train stations etc. Do you think as the years go by security will remain strict or lighten up? Hopefully they'll remain the same or advance a little because we never know when terrororists will strike again. In my opinion i think security should loosen up just a little.

Minimum wage

It is pretty easy to say the our border patrol isn't the best, but in order for the people of Mexico to make it over to America they have to be pretty strong and really want to come. I believe our government makes it just hard enough for Mexicans to come over so that the only ones that do make it are the strongest workers and will help our economy the most. This is why most Mexicans that make it over here are young men that have a lot of work to offer.

Border Cartel

On Friday March 28Th the Mexican government sent 2000 troops to the US-Mexico border city of Juarez. The reason they were sent there is because over 200 people have been killed because of the drug trafficking that goes on near this city. Do you think these troops will help our government fight the war on the border? Or do you think that these troops will get involved with the two rival cartels?

Uganda

Not too long ago TCC showed a video on the civil wars that have been going on for over twenty-two years in Uganda. I knew things in Africa were bad but the government in Uganda Squeezes millions of people in to overcrowded refugee camps that have a huge fatality rate due to unsanitary conditions. What can we do in order to help these people? The video takes us into those camps. A rebel group know as the LRG is terrorizing this country of good citizens. Those kids would do a lot if the just had the opportunities that we have. These are the people America should help.

Equal We Stand

I logged on to the computer today and I saw that today is the 40Th anniversary since Martin Luther king Jr. Was assassinated. He did alot for civil rights and I'm amazed at all the change that we have seen in those forty years. Even though I don't believe everyone is treated the same here in America I do believe we have come a long way and that we will continue to strive for everyone to be treated the same.
