I remembered hearing a radio broadcast on NPR where an author was researching a new book on “Sundown Towns.” The concept of the book was to write about the segregation that is still implemented in the United States. A Sundown Town was simply a town where if you were not white, you had better not be in town after sundown. The last physical road sign to mark a town to actually pronounce this clearly for anyone in public to see I remember the interview claiming was taken down in the 1990’s during the Clinton administration.“Sundown towns existed throughout the nation, but more often were located in the northern states that were not pre-Civil War slave states” (Wikipedia).

I do not know why the link is not showing up on the blog. It shows up in the editing process of creating a New Post. Here is the web address:

It is hard to fathom that anything like a Sundown Town would even exist after the 70's. It is pretty audacious for a town to place a sign proclaiming that sentiment. Even if a sign no longer exists, does the town and its people still hold to the mind crippling "out of town" attitude? Foolishness to wisdom can sometimes be a long, hard journey for some.

By my understanding, there are thousands of towns in the U.S. still with this racist sentiment. Most of these towns are located up in the northern geography of the United States. I imagine that quite possibly it would have been greater in the South except for the discerning “eye” of the government. There are to be sure though towns in the South that are racist. I have been informed of some very racist towns in the greater metropolitan area of Tallahassee.
