Ohio's Seven Presidents

Kyra Jenkins, AMH2010, Monday-Friday, 10:30 am

The state of Ohio can boast of seven men who emerged from this area and became a President of the United States of America. Only six of the seven were actually born in Ohio. At the time of election six of the seven were residents of the state. William Henry Harrison was not born in Ohio, but was a resident when elected. Ulysses S. Grant and Benjamin Harrison were born and raised in Ohio, but were not a resident at the time of election. Those who were both born and residents of Ohio are as follows: Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, and Warren G. Harding.

I had always heard that Virginia had the moniker as being the birth place of more presidents than any other state. So I looked it up and more presidents were born in Virginia than any other State in the U.S. so far. More interestingly though, is the fact that of the eight men who served in the office of the president, seven of them served as president before the year 1877. Not really surprising though considering that Virginia was one of the first states, and that it seems by the relation of proximity to Washington, D.C. and or relation of the Founding Fathers relation to themselves and Virginia that Virginia would have such a head start in supplying elected presidents. After all, it would be hard to elect a president from Hawaii in 1788.

You have kept me on my toes looking up words in the dictionary! I looked up moniker which means name or nickname and have now added a new word to my vocabulary. Yes, Virginia definitely holds the record for the most Presidents. How astute of you to notice. But I am from Ohio, not from Virginia, so I was more familiar and interested with the past Ohio Presidents. But as you said, Virginia holds more Presidents before 1877 while Ohio can only claim two. Six were, however, notable before 1877. I was born and raised to the east of the Cincinnati area in a very small town of Bethel, Ohio. Ulysses S. Grant was raised here and his parents are buried just outside of the town limits. I definitely see new blog material coming into view. By the way, notice there was no competition for President from Alaska before 1877.
