I had thought that the Seminole tribe was actually an amalgam of several tribes that were pushed to the south into Florida. So I looked it up. The Seminoles are of Creek origin and moved south into the territories of the Apalachee and Timucua. They also included among their number runaway slaves, Native American and African American. Most of the Seminole Tribes surrendered and were moved west during the Second Seminole War.

How moving to know that the Seminole Indians accepted and included the runaway slaves into their tribes. Other tribes as well probably did the same. If they could live life together on equal ground, then why could the white man not do the same. I believe it was a greed factor. Accumulation of wealth can be an evil force.

This is interesting because we discussed in class how some whites and blacks would assimilate into Native American culture. This definitely reinforces that notion, and speaks well of the Native American disposition. How shameful that most Americans met this kindness with intolerance.
