For those of you who don't know, the watergate scandal was based on the break in committed by 5 men to obtain wire tapings stored in the watergate office complex. THe tapes in aquestion were recordings of secret conversations held between the president with his closest staff. Out of fear that information from these conversations would leak out, the Presidents cabinet hired 5 men to retain the recordings. After the trial, Congress gave President Nixon the choice of resigning or facing impeachment. Why would congress allow something as severe as a Presidential conspiracy go unpunished? Even after his resignation, should Nixon have been put on trial as just a US citizen?

I know it sounds terrible to say that they would try a preserve a reputation, but that is probably why. In my opinion , Nixon should have been tried. There should have been a full punishment for what happened.

Nixon should have been tried. he was all about power and controling. he deserve to be punished for his actions as do all other presidents have and should. it is because of people like him nobody trust the goverment and not trying him just makes it worse.

Oh my goodness. I agree with you both. I did a little more research and I guess were not the only ones out there who feel that way. I know that the reputation of the US would be put on the line for judgement, but what about terrorism. Maybe, just maybe, he is the reason Osama bin Laden felt the need to lead a strike against the US. Maybe he views us as a bunch of "push-overs". Just a thought.....
